[Plug] Touchpad questions

Hi all.

Is there a way to make my touchpad on my HP530 laptop turn itself off
when I have plugged in an external mouse? I have tried installing a
program called gpointing-device-settings which allows me to disable
the touchpad manually, although for some reason it is not sticking and
I have to keep doing it.

I'm not sure on how to write scripts to do that, but I'm willing to
learn. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, without any modifications.
