While I'm keen to maximise our spend I'd have to draw a line at sing star microphones. The sound from them is pathetic.

Well, the nice thing is that Kosmic has stock of this kind of stuff, and
we could pick this up at an hour's notice. We're also still interested
in a portable PA amplified speaker, hopefully a little less scratchy
than my old ghetto blaster.

Over $1000 for a single channel of wireless audio routing, though... does
seem a bit gold-plated power-cord-y. Does anyone have an example of a
comparable setup? 
There is a cheaper head mounted mic option that isnt as compact/invisible. Just to point out, this is what we used at PyCon so you can see (and hear) the devices in action in those videos.


With this as the comparison, we can afford to spend a few hundred dollars
to trial an alternative system for one or more speakers or one or more
audience mikes.

Traditional FM stage mikes, for example? Bluetooth class 1? DECT?
Anything producing a normal mixable audio signal in the form of XLR or
audio jack at line in or microphone levels.

Does anyone have some handy SingStar wireless USB microphones? They
might show up in lsusb as simple USB audio devices, ID 1415:0020. 
The only complication with these other approaches is that, when/if we have multiple parallel streams one day, we'll be limited in our approach. We know that with this proposed solution, there are 12 clear channels to use side by side: that's 6 streams of 2 wireless mics per stream (presenter, audience).


James - I'd like to have a test audio loopback on the new laptops,
can they pass through audio from such a device (or a simple microphone)
through Pulseaudio with no significant latency? (Someone else might have
that setup already) 
Bringing one of the new laptops with me tonight to the Moon & 6.


 
I can't quite bring myself to nod yet. It's nice to have the high end
equipment as a fallback, but we're losing out on the functionality of
the extra audio channel or two, and having a value-for-money system that
it would make sense to build again. 
I feel that, since we have the grant money, we can afford to do this. We will still have our Boundary mics, and any handheld wired mics we want, plus the audience wireless mic. We've never needed two wireless headsets thus far, despite changing our format around - and if we do, we can alway use the cheapy one we already have for the secondary presenter???
