Hi, Richard, all!

I saw the request for RSVP's went out this week for:
https://www.waia.asn.au/node/61#overlay-context=node/3

I think we're keen:
 * Luke and I were planning to attend already;
 * Michael Van Delft and Harry McNally would like to join us;
 * Euan de Kock and Leon Wright should be able to make it as well;
 * Happy to let you guys help out or peer into it. We have an overview at:
   http://www.plug.org.au/projects/video

The beauty of our video recording/streaming system is that it makes good
use of cheap hardware and volunteer labour. Between us we should be able
to have a person on each of two cameras, audio mixer, video mix/director,
recording check and a microphone runner. We can directly capture slideshow
presentations from a VGA laptop; and hopefully someone sitting at home
can give us some live streaming checks as well.

PLUG, like WAIA, is a not-for-profit, but our video equipment is our
major asset and we would like to work out a little compensation; and
we'd like to give our volunteers a small stipend to help make sure they
show up on time and don't mind buying expensive parking. We haven't
worked out the details of that yet, but if you have something in mind,
go ahead and tell us. We might use that to fund a Christmas dinner for
the AV team or some such. <grin> (or our next upgrades!)

Meanwhile we can only offer our best effort - if we have logistics
failures, no-shows or equipment failure we might not be able to provide
a full service. (e.g. multiple cameras, live streaming) We're planning
a trial run between now and the 24th.

It's not a deal killer, but it'd make us feel better if you could
confirm WAIA's insurance status? As a WAIA event, are we covered if we
or a member of the public trips over our power cables or some such?

To the rest of the team...

 * Jason - when's a good time to pick up the AV gear at your place?

 * Paul - I think I'll see you at Spacecubed tonight, could you bring
   that QNAP?

 * Leon - likewise, could you bring another Thinkpad or two?

I tried a couple of things out at our monthly meeting this Tuesday:

 * Imaged one of the $395 Thinkpad T410's, made it an avmaster host;

 * The internal firewire controller was recognised, but it didn't detect
   the Canon HV40 - it's possible that the 4pin 1394 port is broken;

 * We need some 6-6 cables and some lightweight 4-4 cables;

 * Made hotswap PCI Expresscards work! and I was able to record with that;

 * My Sony Singstar wireless microphones work surprisingly well. Won't
   be as good as our "professional" ones, of course. They show up as a
   single USB audio device. Red mike is the Right channel, blue the left;

 * We could replicate that tonight if people have the time.
