Word of Advice (one I've always stumped myself on):

Firstly:
Check the %$^&(*#*$&^# hardware.

I've been fighting with a problem with firewire (which in my experience
"Just Works") and it bloody well turns out not only does one of the cables
I'm using have a faulty 4 pin plug, but the camera I'm using looks like it
has a faulty port.

Secondly:
Troubleshooting is very difficult when you don't have a _known_ working
configuration.
