Subject: [Chat] IRC, Slack, Matrix — unified chat at LCA2017

Hello there,
tl;dr: use IRC, use Slack, or use Matrix, as per
https://linux.conf.au/wiki/conference/chat/. LCA2017 is the first
LCA to bridge between these three platforms in an attempt to make
sure everyone can chat with everyone.
The longer read:
While IRC has been the traditional chat platform at LCA, people have
recently started using Slack, and while choice is yours, a couple of
us didn't like that there has been a segregation of our community
into cliques.
So we've spent the last few weeks figuring out how to unify the
crowds. We think the solution is called matrix.org
(http://matrix.org). It's the new kid on the block in form of an
open-standard, open-source, federated chat protocol/platform with
all the features you'd expect,¹ and a couple of bridges available to
connect between the different networks.
Please see https://linux.conf.au/wiki/conference/chat/ for more
information.
LCA provides a fantastic environment to put this relatively young
project to good use. We deem it ready, and we hope you'll soon be as
excited as we are. Note that we have upstream support, so if
problems pop up, we're not only confident to be able to resolve them
quickly; We'll also contribute to the advancement of this highly
promising platform just by using it!
If you're interested in this sort of thing on the meta-level, pop
into #lca-matrix:matrix.org (bridged to #lca-matrix/freenode), and
do keep an eye out for the unified communications BoF:
https://linux.conf.au/wiki/conference/birds_of_a_feather_
sessions/libre-unified-communications/
Scott (faulteh), Ben (sturm), Martin (madduck), and probably others
(if your name belongs here, I'll buy you a beer…)
¹) presence, files, voice/video, multi-device, e2e-encryption (which
we don't use), etc.…
PS: There's even an ircd so you could use your IRC client to connect
to Matrix, join #linux.conf.au:matrix.org, which is bridged to
IRC, and …
