This looks good.
I'm starting to work with getting v4l devices talking to dvswitch
now anyway, but we've got a tried and tested solution with firewire
that is reliable so lets not complicate the setup at this stage.

The catch with USB devices, is that if they are not DV based (DV
format over USB) we need to encode the video into DV on the fly -
and this may be expensive in CPU terms. Most v4l devices like web
cameras don't feed out DV, but rather a simple jpeg/mpeg picture
stream. I'm not sure what video cameras provide over USB yet.

I'll start looking at the tally light system again - as we're moving
to a laptop based solution, we will probably lose any serial port
option for this, but I have some experience with developing circuits
based on Atmel micro controllers, and can develop a simple USB to
LED interface that looks like either a MIDI or Serial device - both
easily scriptable from Linux and driven directly from the USB port.
This might be a nice open source/open hardware project to feed back
into the dvswitch project.
they have a battery eliminator included, or do we need that too?

We do need a line item for assorted cables, otherwise we will be forced
to pay for them as required, without being funded by the grant. (More
likely after they're required, which is typical, but irritating)

Yes, such as the ExpressCard Firewire adaptors. Anyone want to
jump on a quote for that.

Why get a Fury (to capture HDMI to Twinpact to PC), when you have HDMI

Exactly. The Fury gives us a low CPU known working capture option for
HDMI from cameras and HDCP-producing consumer electronics, with a few
manual switch overides that could come in handy.
Direct HDMI capture doesn't give us any of that, but it's hopefully a
workable preferred option for future new equipment.

I suspect that after we have a working solution from the grant,
we'll want to tinker with purchasing a few additionals here and
there to play with anyway. We can always put in another grant
request to upgrade next year. What we need to address is the
failing hardware, the complexity of the setup with additional
screens and keyboards etc, and the availability of two cameras.
Given we have our second-hand one we purchased, we have a spare
already (or for bigger events).

I also think we need more practice at producing a video. Having
had Mumble working last month, it made a big difference to the
variety of the content we could produce by coordinating vision
switching and camera adjustment. Be good to get the tally light
stuff working as well.
