.. the MTU thing is a good thing to chase up.
This feels like a standard broken path MTU discovery issue, precisely
because of misconfigured MTUs somewhere in the path between you and
the website.
Set your PC MTU and router MTU (facing you, eg ethernet-ethernet,
wifi-wifi) to something small, like 576. That way you don't end up
causing another set of MTU mismatch issues.
The other thing you can do is try icmp ping frames of different sizes,
from 64 bytes up to 1500 bytes. See if you hit a size that doesn't
work.
