[off-topic] scsi converter

Anyone have any hardware experience with scsi->usb converters for scanning?

I have (what I think) is a very good scanner from yesteryear - 50ppm
duplexing colour scanner. Trouble is that it only has scsi interface. I
have a dated desktop that can run it with the scsi card, but I've
transitioned away from it to a laptop for all my computing and put it in
mothballs.

I've searched high and low for a scsi->usb converter. They exist like
hen's teeth, and one really good one, by ratoc, was only recently
discontinued because the critical chip in it is discontinued. Damn. The
remaining ones I can find seem to be by belkin and adaptec, but reported
data speeds are usb 1 - if you can find anyone who has stock of them :-(
Plus, they're not cheap.

It's a dilemma. I know the only answer may be to use an old box as a
scanner server, but not very convenient for the sporadic use I would put
it to. Anyone know of anything better?

Gavin
