I agree with that, and I expect it will be fixed if I revert to earlier
software. That won't help my kernel plans.

I installed rpms: I think they all came from 5.2 it happens, so they
should be good ones (and they should work with my kernel).

umm umm I only ran it overnight.
(wanders off to view logs)
Nov 15 20:43:44 possum kernel: Linux version 2.1.126 (root at possum.os2.ami.com.au) (gcc version 2.7.2.3) #6 Sun Nov 15 20:25:25 WS

Hah! Hah!
Didn't work with 2.1.126 either.
Here's what's recommended:
Current Minimal Requirements
****************************

Upgrade to at *least* these software revisions before thinking you've
encountered a bug! If you're unsure what version you're currently
running, the suggested command should tell you.

- Kernel modules 2.1.121 ; insmod -V
- Gnu C 2.7.2.3 ; gcc --version
- Binutils 2.8.1.0.23 ; ld -v
- Linux libc5 C Library 5.4.46 ; ls -l /lib/libc.so.*
- Linux libc6 C Library 2.0.7pre6 ; ls -l /lib/libc.so.*
- Dynamic Linker (ld.so) 1.9.9 ; ldd --version or ldd -v
- Linux C++ Library      2.7.2.8                 ; ls -l /usr/lib/libg++.so.*
- Procps 1.2.9 ; ps --version
- Procinfo 14 ; procinfo -v
- Psmisc 17 ; pstree -V
- Mount 2.7l ; mount --version
- Net-tools 1.45 ; hostname -V
- Loadlin 1.6a
- Sh-utils 1.16 ; basename --v
- Autofs 0.3.11 ; automount --version
- NFS 2.2beta37 ; showmount --version
- Bash 1.14.7 ; bash -version
- Ncpfs 2.2.0 ; ncpmount -v
- Pcmcia-cs 3.0.5 ; cardmgr -V
- PPP 2.3.5 ; pppd -v
- PCI Utilities 1.08 ; lspci --version

Now a lot of that is irrelevant: no impact (eg PPP) or not installed (eg
Pcmcia-cs, PCI Utilities).
Obvious (to me) candidates (updated means Possum has newer versions than
emu):
Linux glibc - updated
Procps - updated
Procinfo - Installed on possum, not on emu therfore probably
                 irrelevant
NFS - updated - most likely candidate
ncpmount - not installed (so don't ask)

This is the nfs I have:
[summer at possum reports]$ rpm -qi nfs-server
Name : nfs-server Distribution: Manhattan
