Without getting to tied down  in the details each version of the X spec 
seems to have had slightly different versions of the xterm.

The trick I've used over the years is to match the termcap  and terminfo 
definitions with the xterm level I am using.

The current versions of XFREE offer terminfo updates which allow for the 
updating of even the most ancient versions of X which some 'reputable' 
vendors try and pass off on the public.
