Just appeared on slashdot and news.com
summary:
The US DOJ has announced its preferred option of forcing M$ to license
the Win-9X and NT source code. Details aren't entirely clear, but the
state attorneys have backed the plan.
Corel Inc has immediately announced plans to release a Win32 subsystem
for intel-based Unix systems, including Linux. NT/95 device drivers wont
be supported, but applications are expected to run unchanged. They say it
will be integrated with X, whatever that means. This is not an emulator,
but a true port.
With companies such as Apple expected to license the source too, this
could mean the win32 platform becoming even _more_ entrenched. Not a happy
thought.
Personally I would hope that wider availability of the win32 source
will mean knowldege leaking to the Wine developers, and we will see big
improvements there. There was talk of complete 'open-sourcing' of windoze
but that idea appears to have been dropped.
