[plug] Can't connect in X

Hi, now that I have my Linux box up and running, graphics and all, I would
like to use it for the Internet.

I am however having some trouble doing that in X. I can start a xterm and
connect via minicom, so it's nothing to do (?) with the modem settings.

For some reason, which I haven't been able to fathom out, I can't get the
dialer to talk to the modem, in X.

I found something about being in loopback mode??? Is that the problem?? If
so, how do I fix it??
