John writes that he uses a timeout of 2 hours to get
around the inactivity problem :-)

I'm not sure if there's any cost involved with having a
high timeout value, otherwise why is the default 15 mins?

The second value can be kept low as it's the length of time to keep a
connection open when something -- I don't know what -- has indicated the
connection is no longer needed -- hence the "FIN" packet.
