Ouch! What did you do to your libs.  I have done a manual upgrade of
libc5 to glibc2.  It was a lot of work, and  when I consider how long it
takes to do a fresh install it just wasn't worth the effort.  You
should be able to do a reinstall without reformatting any or all of your
partitions - it depends on how messed your system is and maybe what
distribution you are using.

I keep /, /usr, and /home on separate partitions in case an upgrade does
not go well. In that case I at least get to keep /home and maybe
repartition the others.

I tried to upgrade SUSE 5.2 to SUSE 6.0 but managed to reformat all my 
partitions - which wasn't what I intended but at least I'd backed up
/home and various config files in /etc onto CD.
