I think IRC is an excellent resource in many situations - since it's
much more immediate than email you can be "walked-through" things a
little more and it's also good to have interactive discussions about
various ideas and opinions. The two channels I'm on most commonly are
#linux on the ozorg network (try aussie.oz.org or mpx.sydney.oz.org) and
#linuxaus on the linpeople network (irc.linux.org.au being the Perth
server). Both channels have different types of people on them with
varying degrees of knowledge and helpfulness and they tend to be at
their most active at different times - which is good because you can go
to one or the other depending on which has the most people awake. The
major difference is #linux is a much more open "community" with lots of
different people coming and going all all the time - given it's on a
major Australian IRC network. #linuxaus is a much more tightly-knit
bunch of people with a larger group of regulars who are there virtually
every day/night. For both chatting to people and asking questions, both
are excellent resources. :)

Hope this helps,

Christian.

freedom, they may be out of luck with me, but I won't allow them to
define for me what is right, what is worth spending my life for.
