Best starter kit for beginners with Linux is the "Linux Pocketbook" -
put out by APC Magazine for $14.95. It comes with Redhat 5.2 - the best
version for beginners IMHO - Debian's great - but I think it would be
harder to use for someone not familiar with Linux...

Linux is good for:

1. Software Development - all programming tools included in 99% of
distributions.
2. Anyone wanting to learn computing - everything you will ever want to
know can be found out with incredible ease - assuming you have an
internet connection - just search usenet - www.dejanews.com and 99% of
problems will be solved.
3. Internet Access - (most ISP's run Linux to provide internet services
to everyone else).
4. Stability - it never crashes.
5. Learning how to set up Server computers (all server tools on standard
configurations).
6. The list goes on, but I'm out'a time (at work)... 8-)

Dave.
