edit /etc/X11/XF86Config
Find any references to "Virtual" in Section "Screen" and comment them out.
Also, find any references to "Modes", and if any of them say something
like:

Modes	"640x480" "800x600" 1024x768" "1152x900"
and you're not using modes above 640x480, then delete those modes from the
list.
(but always comment and copy the line first so you have a backup in case
things go wrong)
