[plug] Debian & tar problem ...

I'm trying to copy chunks of my system onto another drive, to free up space on
/, and I've been using, from the new dir:

tar cvfl - | tar xfp -

This "copies" the stuff, but all directories are not being created with the
correct ownership. I *think* it may be because most/all dirs (this is the
/home volume), are group + s attribute. Could this be confusing tar??

Are there any other ways to do the copy correctly, and keep ALL information??

Thanks in advance...
