I'd have to say that Java2's 'Swing' package is a lot more advanced (certainly
more aestheticaly pleasing) than a TCL/TK UI. From what I've seen, perl seems to
be best suited as a 'glue' language, it's strongest feature being that it's
flexibility. This is also the primary advantage of linux itself IMO. Being able
to take various components and tie them together in all sorts of variations makes
all sorts of new applications available. From what I've read, Microsoft's
achilles heal is that it's application family/OS is so tightly integrated,
presumably for competitive advantage, that any major change in the way computing
is done (did someone say information appliance?) will make the technology a dead
end. Linux (and perl) may not survive in their current form, but I am willing to
wager that bits and pieces of it will see in the 22nd century.
