Thanks for the helpful replies, David & Matt.

It seems that I was correct in my concerns about security.  I'll check out
the Samba solution (hadn't thought of that but it makes good sense since
I'm running Samba anyway) and will hunt out some info on wu-ftpd and
proftpd.  If nothing else, this exercise will have taught me a lot more
about security :-)
