Its possible because all (?) the modern motherboards have bios's
(eeproms) that can be upgraded. Normally these bios are only updated by
a program written and supplied by the manufacturer of the motherboard.
Conceivably any hacker, armed with the information how to do this, could
load corrupt instructions into the bios eeprom.
