No, I think what Linus means is different distros with different
configurations should suit different people.
This is why RedHat & Debian etc. already ask users what the "typical role"
of the system is, and installs the required components.  Linus is saying
the same should happen on a greater scale than it already is, with the
kernel.
Either someone is going to write a better interface to compiling kernels
(one that doesn't scare newbies away) or the various distributions will be
shipping more kernel packages than they already do.

Good news about the ETA of 3rd quarter for 2.4 though.
