Where are you?
Can you bring your machine to UWA two Mondays from now?
If you can type (as root)...
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb status
...the script will tell you whether Samba is running. Try "start"
instead of "status" if it isn't. Edit /etc/smb.conf to change things and
the command above but "restart" instead of "status" when you want the
changes to take effect. Better still, type...
cd /usr/doc/HOWTO
less SMB-HOWTO
...space to page down (Ctrl-U, Ctrl-D do up/down half a page, h for
help, q to quit). If you get gobbledygook, try "zless SMB-HOWTO.gz"
instead. You can use Alt-F1, Alt-F2 etc to access more consoles so that
you can read and do simultaneously.
If you can log in as root and start X (type "startx"), there is an
interactive control panel which will let you turn SMB on and off
permanently (in the runlevels section).

You can see evidence of aliens in your oatmeal, if you look with the
right mindset and expectations. -- Jeramie Hicks, in sci.space.policy
