[plug] gcc error

I've just installed gcc via Debian's dpkg but when I try to use it to make
an app I get:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

(everything done as root)

That's a problem isn't it.  <cheese-shop voice> I mean, gcc is basically
there to create executables.  Not much point having it if it doesn't
work.</voice>

Any ideas?
