That 45 second delay looks like the Annex CLI was expecting a command,
maybe ppp. Try connecting with minicom and typing things like "help" to
see what happens.

Also, chat can provide carriage returns for you; try a char sequence
like:

CONNECT ""
TIMEOUT 15
sername:--sername: "daughterusername"
ssword: "daughterpassword"
Copyright--promptstring ppp

Replace daughterXXX as appropriate, promptstring with whatever the
"annex" prompts with, and ppp with whatever command the "annex" expects.
