Nice job Matt (of presenting a number of references to the initial article).
I had to shut down my Linux server last week (the IT Director found out
about it). Maybe Linux isn't ready for serious stuff, but as you say NT
isn't either. We are back to the pre-Linux position of really flaky
performance and no debugging info.
An interesting effect of using Linux/Samba is that you can get acceptable
performance running Access databases over a WAN - something that is probably
10 times slower (unmeasured) if you use an NT server. Something to do with
oplocks I suppose. Anyway - a couple of working databases are now no use
now they're on a P166 NT server whereas they were fine on a 486-33 Samba
server.
Our network admin officer did point out that as far as corporations are
concerned, Y2K is currently everything. If you can't get an assurance from
the vendor that the software is Y2K compliant, no-one in a corporate
environment will use it, no matter how you personally might value the
assurance. He said he was unable to find a Samba Y2K assurance and unable
to get a Linux assurance. I did look at the Debian site which has an
itemised Y2K list but have not looked for a Samba assurance.
K.
