I did think of that .. :( .. I've swapped the RAM for another 2 x 8Mg Simms
that I had laying around and when that didn't work, I even tried 2 x 4Mg
Simms .. 

The RAM and the HDD were my first thoughts but could it be the hdd
controller on the motherboard ?? would that bring up a crc error ?? 

All thoughts gratefully received ;)
