HANDOUTS

There will be recent RedHat CDs handed out (freeware version) and
probably StarOffice (still considering); some paper notes will be
provided for you to fill in. You will be keeping more notes on your
machine.

PERIPHERALS

Peripherals dealt with will definitely include NICs, printers and modems
(software modems? ahahahahahahahahahaha...); sound cards and other
esoterica (IR interfaces etc) will depend upon how we go for time. Two
classes of machine will be dealt with: completely blank and
with-precious-Windows-or-other-partition (but back it up: if you mistype
or don't listen and destroy that partition, it's your fault and you fix
it).

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

New hardware is preferred and can be ordered for the event (you will
recieve upper-middle-quality hardware at a lower-middle-quality price:
8.4G HDD, 4MB PCI video card, 32MB RAM, 15 inch monitor is the default
configuration). Hard disks and other components can also be obtained
separately. If you want to buy hardware, please consider posting to this
mailing list as it is read by several hardware suppliers (who WILL
respond by email, not to the list, hint, hint!).

You should have AT LEAST 1.2GB of free disk since the install will be
kitchen-sink, and 16MB of RAM (32MB if planning on installing
StarOffice). Less than a PCI video card is frowned upon, and ALL
HARDWARE MUST ACTUALLY WORK: THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE CLINIC - BRING YOUR
MACHINE TO NEXT MONDAY'S PLUG MEETING IF UNSURE - we have allocated no
time for dealing with dodgy ancient equipment in this course (although
later courses may address this issue). x86 machines are assumed.

DEBIAN

One of the proposed later courses deals with setting up Linux as a
server (this course will only touch on security and like network
issues); the proposed server course is likely to be "dual-stream"
(RedHat, simple up-front and popular; and Debian, more conservative and
a better long-term bet - IMHO).

WHY YOU SHOULD DO THIS NOW

This instance of the course will be a better bet than others because it
will be smaller, you'll get more personal attention, and your say and
experience will influence later courses. It will be more of a risk
because it's the Alpha version, "first kiss." (-:
