As long as you are upgrading within major version mine always go smoothly

ie 
6.0->6.1 was a dream
5.0->5.1->5.2 wsn't quite as nice BUT nothing broke

I never upgraded anything from 2.1, 3.03, 4.0, 4.1 or 4.2. BUT I have heard 
horror stories.
