You should get about 3k/sec each way. 56K modems are asymmetric and can 
only get that rate on incoming data. Outbound data goes at 33k6.

The reason is that data loses time in the analog to digital and digital to 
analog conversion. The better IAPs have digital equipment that avoids the 
translation between their systems and the local exchange.

Better in this context means those who offer 56K connexions.
