64-BIT MERCED CHIP BOOTS UP
Speaking at the Intel Developer's Forum Tuesday,
Intel CEO Craig Barrett announced the company
has delivered its first 64-bit processor to PC
makers. Sample processors, code-named Merced,
booted a 64-bit variant of Windows 2000 and Linux.
The Merced is the first of a number of Intel initiatives
to build an infrastructure that will support billions of
connected computers. Barrett also said the
Pentium III Coppermine chip will debut this October
with speeds as high as 700 MHz
