It's the section of the manual the command is documented in.
It's not as important now, because the "man" command searches all
sections, but the reason the manual was split up into sections to start
with, is because they were in seperate books - so it helped knowing which
book to pick up to find out about a new command someone just told you
about.

I believe the UCC has a bookshelf with the manual in book format
