I've got both the S3 Trio 3D AGP and the Trio 3D Mark II running on XFree

I remember I had to customise the Monitor Modeline configuration for it to
work.  Found the settings on some web site somewhere... can't remember
where.

Here is what I've used:
Modeline "1024x768" 75 1024 1048 1184 1328 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
Modeline "1280x1024" 135 1280 1312 1416 1664 1024 1027 1030 1064
