Nop its not, technically you are breaking the law, since you are duplicating
someones work without their permission. Sadly this goes for spare parts
as well - ie. If a spare part is not available and you manufacture one
to get the car going you are also breaking the law... Stupid I know.

And its also against the law to sell a duplicate - comes under 'stolen
property' any sufficiently disgruntled company could pursue it - even
through a writ of mandamus or equivalent mechanism etc...

But yes its true most of the time I can't see any car co getting upset,
would be far too much bad publicity etc.
