An External one.

Probably 90% of internal modems are winmodems.  Some have been
rumnoured to be able to work with Linux, with a bit of stuffing
around.

I personally have a Lightspeed 56K external which gives me no bother.
I've also used a Hayes 336 (which I have still got somewhere).
