Actually... I think I was on the wrong track, there. Might still
be possible, but I can't think how, offhand.

Ah, that's the easy bit, but I'm not sure what you mean by graphics/
page numbering. GhostScript will convert PS to or from PDF, and there's
a ps2pdf script that comes with it to simplify that a little. Whatever's
in the PS will be converted, whether that's graphics or text.
