Just so your msg doesn't go completely unanswered this time :-)

I don't know the answer to your question but a search for binfmt turned up

      /usr/doc/kernel-doc-2.2.5/binfmt_misc.txt

on my Red Hat 6.1 system - it may have some pointers.
(This file is part of the kernel-doc rpm .)
