My box looks to be very sick.

Many GUI's do strange things, including(but not exclusive too) turning my
mouse pointer into a largish square and fonts being displayed as blocks.

I'm a linux newbie and haven't an idea where to start.

I first noticed the problem when trying to configure my printer and i
couldn't read the error messages. The latest one was trying to install
Eterm (configure ; make ; make install) which looked like it was going to
work until i moved my mouse over the window.
