Ive had a linux machine stop reponding. The last thing in the message
file is

Aug 23 04:09:06 odin kernel: iput: device 08:41 inode 2426486 still
has aliases!

And everything seems to have been working til then. Now

ls -l  /dev/sdc9
brw-rw----    1 root     disk       8,  41 May  6  1998

So the kernel is talking about /dev/sdc9, right? But

unix>fdisk -l /dev/sdc

Disk /dev/sdc: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1106 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
   /dev/sdc1             1       294   2361523+  83  Linux
   /dev/sdc2           295       549   2048287+  83  Linux
   /dev/sdc3           550      1106   4474102+  83  Linux

There is no partition 9! Not only that but none of the sdc partitions
should have been mounted (not in fstab - these partitions have empty file
systems,ie looks like a just made file system)

Any ideas? The kernel is 2.2.16
