[plug] lpd probs

I'm attempting to set up my printer using printtool

I'm getting the message:

Error printing test page to queue lp

Error reason: lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queried, but cannot start daemon

I've tried everything in the printtool help/debugging hints including changing dev Nos (lp0-2 etc).
lpd looks to be running:

[root at localhost lpd]# pwd
/var/spool/lpd
[root at localhost lpd]# cat lpd.lock 
8017
[root at localhost lpd]# ps -uax | grep lpd
root      8017  0.0  0.5  1176  504 ?        S    01:08   0:00 lpd

My printer is on and i've restarted the daemon several times (using printtols "restart lpd" option)

The printer itself is a sharp jx-9500H laser
i'm using hp laserjet as the filter

Any ideas?
