You will probably want to look at either svgatextmode (there is a debian
package) or better yet, if you have a supported GFX card, have a look at
the framebuffer support in the kernel.
(In fact if you have a Matrox G200, like me, you'll find it is not
supported by svgatextmode, but is supported very well by matroxfb)

Also, if you have a PII-class cpu, fb will automatically set up the
required mtrr's. (makes for a HUGE difference in speed)
