In the first instance, at the lilo prompt say something like
linux vga=ask

When it asks, say "scan."

When it shows what numbers it thinks, choose one.

Once you have a choice you like, you can configure it permanently in lilo; 
there are other ways to set it, but lilo stays set.

I think you still have to compile in mtrr support;-)

I have fb support working (sort of) with my i740 card. It works well 
untill X starts; then when I switch back to a text console, my monitor 
powers down (power saving). Switching back to X starts it again, but 
(amongst other things) I do not get to see the shutdown messages.
