I'm not really qualified to answer this one but I'll give it a shot.

They both accomplish the same goal, remote email access.  
Imap has more features.
	mulitple folders
	you can leave your mail on the server, to be accesed from many places.
POP is basically:
	do I have any mail?
	Yes:
		Cool lets download it to this machine
	No:
		Okay seeya later

Imap has had lots more holes in it.  It's 6 of one half-a-dozen of the other
in your situation.
