I can try. :-)

It all fits logically together when take into account the update speed
on various parts of an open source project. The source is updated
first, then support files (config, and description files) and then
parhaps manual pages and the rest of the documentation. I would guess
the support for this parport scanner is somewhere between support
files and manual pages. The list of supported scanners are
automatically generated from backend description files, and is likely
to be almost up to date.
Also, as far as I know, the scanner is a TWAIN scanner.

The last paragraph comments on the possibility of making this work.
It does not describe something working at the moment. It is possible
to make a TWAIN driver on top on SANE, it is not possible to make a
SANE backend on top of TWAIN.

I do not know. The only way for you to find out is to test it. The
HP backend home page would probably have the most up to date
information.
