[plug] SSH

Hi all I am trying to get 'SSH' working 
I had a startup message that says  the file permissions on
/etc/ssh/ssh_host_key where incorect I fixed this with
chmod 600 ssh_host_key

It now appears that I have to generate the key file somehow
I have run ssh-keygen as root and as a user.

Can somebody please explain what I have to do
The following is from /var/log/messages
I also get the same when I type sshd
 
 sshd: error: Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key: Success
Jul  9 14:49:25 squirrel-gw sshd[509]: error: Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key: Success
Jul  9 14:49:26 squirrel-gw sshd: sshd startup failed
