Go and find a really old distribution of Linux.

I had a version of Slackware (2.x I think) that came with kernel 1.2.13
(which is rock-solid) and a version of X that quite happily ran in 8MB of
RAM (on a 486SX/25 Laptop)

It even ran Netscape 1.2 ok so long as you didn't mind waiting 15 mins
(really) for it to load, and avoided graphics-intensive websites, which
luckily weren't that common 3 years ago, which is when I last ran X
on the laptop, which now happily runs debian 1.3 (bo) console-only.
