[plug] Woohoo - Q3 finally works

Hi all,

Just thought I'd let you all know a happy thing has occurred - okay, many
of you have had this working a long time back, but still - I've (finally)
managed to get Quake3 working under Linux. Flawlessly.

Just to clarify the hardware - dual Celeron 500s, Creative SBLive
soundcard, Nvidia TNT2 video card. The video card was the main problem, but
the latest drivers provided by Nvidia finally did the trick.

Ironically, the deciding factor that pushed me to try it again (I've tried
a number of times in the past six(?) months since I got this machine, but
haven't even managed to get 3d acceleration working) was that Q3 under
windows somehow just stopped working - well, admittedly, I hadn't played it
in a while, preferring Unreal Tournament and Half-Life. Anyway, I had to
reinstall it under Windoze as it somehow corrupted itself, but even after a
fresh install it refused to run, giving the console error "user interface
is version 4, expected 3". Sounds like a serious error indeed. *roll of eyes*

So rather than spend ages beating my head against a brick wall trying to
solve that bizarre error and get it to run under Windows, I thought I'd
have another go at getting it to run under Linux. I'd recently read an
article on LinuxGames discussing Nvidia's latest batch of drivers, which
implied that the testers had quite happily managed to get Q3 working using
the TNT2 video card. So, off I went to Nvidia's site, grabbed the relevant
files, followed the instructions, tested some GL screensavers, removed some
Mesa libraries that were getting in the way, tested again, went "woohoo" as
they seemed to be working, downloaded and ran Q3... and bounced about
excitedly as it actually worked.

And even _better_ than under Windows 98, due to the fact that I could use
both CPUs. It runs quite tolerably at 1600x1200 at 32bpp, and absolutely
screams at 1280x1024 at 32bpp. In comparison, I stuck to 1024x768 for best
performance under Windows - it seemed to be wheezing quite a bit at
1280x1024. (of course such comparisons are extremely subjective and should
be taken with several grains of salt)

It's such a weird (but extremely cool) feeling being able to play a game
like this under linux.... *grin*... now I just need to get Kingpin and
Quake II and Heretic II working and letmesee what other games have Linux
executables floating around.....

*bwahahahahahahahahaaaa*
:):):)
