So this was just a general "how do I find a file" question?

Many people seem to be unaware of the "locate" command, possibly because
it isnt standard Unix (or windoze).
 It works from an index updated nightly, and finds files ~instantly.

e.g. "locate patch" , or "locate '*/patch'" to be more precise.
Of course, "which" works fine for commands in your $PATH.
