might have been a typo, seems to work now. But at first it was reporting:
tar: Hmm, this doesn't look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next file header
tar: Only read 6312 bytes from archive samba-latest.tar.gz
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

looked back at the command and realise I type in tar -tvf instead of tar
tzf.

I hope you're writing "tar" not "tat"

MORE INFO PLEASE!

Please, explain what happens when you type the above command.

tar -tzf <filename> should work
tar -tzvf <filename> gives additional info about each file.

You can also leave off the leading "-"

("tar tzvf <filename>" or "tar tzf <filename>")
