Did you run "makeoldconfig" as suggested in the README?
(You did read the README file, right? :)
Also, even if you didn't, it should still have the new version number.
What does "cat /proc/version" tell you?
Does the date corrospond with the date you compiled the new kernel?
If it does, something went wrong with the compilation - untar the tarball
again.
If you downloaded 2.2.16 as a patch, something may have gone wrong
during the patch process. Untar the newest tarball you have and re-run the
patching process.
If the date doesn't match, your new kernel hasn't been installed properly
Did you remember to re-run LILO?
